Not meaning to gloat (too much, anyway)

Just thought you might like to know that I went to BAFTA last night to see 'An audience with Jack Cardiff' . Absoloutely awesome!

Also, somebody at BFI (or somewhere similar) is making a documentary about him and has been working on it for 2 years - it should be coming out this year and is called 'Persistence of Vision' - they showed some of it last night - looks great.

Some brilliant insights too - like for 'A Matter of Life and Death', Michael Powell wanted to do something different as opposed to a fade-in for the opening of the shot when David Niven wakes on the beach and thinks he's in heaven. Cardiff told Powell to look through the camera while he went to the front and breathed on the lens creating a white misty/cloudy effect which fades away to clarity. Powell said 'fantastic! - we're doing it' and they shot it and tha't what's in the film. Very inspiring for us all to know that some great effects don't need lots of money - just a little ingenuity!

Couldn't that fuck up your lens? I guess not. Whats the best way to clean a lens- is it just that stuff you get from camrea shops- or can you just use tissue?

He only breathed on it - wouldn't hurt the lens at all. Actually a good way of cleaning the lens is to breath on it and then wipe it with a soft cloth.

'In' camera effects are great - cheaper and more effective than CGI for certain things. Anyone else got any great little ideas that they've discovered - come on share them with us...
